Working with surveys

Working with surveys

The Effect IO survey editor is the core of the system. A general overview on how to work with surveys follows.

We assume that you have created a new survey and have entered the survey editor. You can also learn more about survey settings here.

About drafts and publishing

In the bottom left corner of the editor you find 2 buttons. It is important to know the difference between these when working with surveys, and especially live surveys.

  1. Save draft: Clicking this button saves the work you are doing in the editor as a new draft. Later when you get back, you will be able to continue to work on this draft until it all changes are ready for publishing. None of the changes you have made since last publishing will be shown to respondents when saving as a draft.
  2. Publish: This publishes the changes you have made in the recent draft to respondents.

New page

All surveys start out as a blank canvas. So you need to start by adding a new page.

Page settings

To view page settings panel, click on the page on left-side menu. A few options occurs

  1. Page name: Used to identify page internally in editor and survey settings
  2. Page icon: If you select the timeline part in the layout, you can enable a page icon. The reference for the icon is set in this field.
  3. Page topic: Set which topic(s) the page should be connected with. You can read more about topics here

Add new question block to the page

Click the dropdown menu in the editor to see a list of possible question types you can add. You find a more detailed overview of question types here. Clicking a given question type adds a block to which you add can add questions.

Editing a question block

Click the question block in editor, and you will see a change in the options panel on the right.

General tab
  1. Custom ID for block: Currently not used
  2. Item number: Displays an item number in survey next to the question block, if set in survey style.
  3. Title translation: The title for the block of questions. Is set for each survey language selected.
  4. Scale: In most question types except some text types, you use a scale to set the answer options. We recommend predefining the scales in the scales editor. This simplifies the adding of same scale later on.
  5. Question column width: Select the width you want for the question texts.
  6. Multiple choice: If multiple answers to each row is possible in the question block, select this. You will see the preview updates from radiobuttons to checkboxes.
  7. Required: Select this if the questions in the block is mandatory to answer. If respondent don't complete all items, he/she will be blocked from progressing in the survey.

Add questions to a block

In the questions tab in the editor, you add new rows with question texts. As you see from the example below, each question row has some unique settings:

  1. Question text in each specified survey language.
  2. Custom ID: This ID will be included in data exports and reference the question (together with text) in the report editor.
  3. Trashbin icon: Clicking this deletes the question. Note: If you delete by error, you can reload the page to make it appear again (unless you have clicked "save as draft" after deleting it).
